How to Use Sound Buttons in Discord Servers

Let’s be a little technical today with sounds and Discord, but little, not so much. After running this website for some days, I realized that some of my the site users are also discord users.

The most common problem new content creators who deal with Discord face is using the sound buttons in discord servers.

In today’s post, I will be giving your some little technical and practical tips to use the sounds of your choice on Discord server.

1. Using Soundboard Bots

The most popular, easy, and reliable method is to use a soundboard bot. These bots allow users to trigger the sounds via commands or custom hotkeys.

Popular Soundboard Bots:

  • Blerp: A well-known digital soundboard bot with a feature of thousands of user-uploaded clips.
  • Resonance: A PC soundboard app that works directly with the Discord’s voice input.
  • Voicemod: A soundboard and voice changer in a  natural combo, widely used among the full-time streamers and gamers.

How to Use:

  1. Invite the Bot: Go to the bot’s official dedicated website or Discord bot list, and click on the “Invite to Server” button.
  2. Grant Permissions: When adding the bot, grant it permission to connect to voice channels and use commands.
Use Commands: Typically, you’ll trigger sounds using slash commands (e.g., /play soundname) or reactions.
  3. Create Custom Buttons: Many bots let you upload your own audio files and bind them to custom triggers.

2. Using Discord’s Built-In Soundboard

In 2023, Discord rolled out a built-in soundboard feature (available in some servers and for Nitro users). This allows server members to play short sound clips during voice chats.

How to Enable & Use:

  1. Check Eligibility: The feature is typically enabled on Community Servers and might be limited by roles or Nitro access.
  2. Upload Sounds: Go to Server Settings > Soundboard. Upload MP3 files (max 5 seconds, usually under 512KB).
  3. Assign Permissions: Decide who can use and upload sounds via role settings.
  4. Play Sounds: Join a voice channel. Click on the soundboard icon given near your voice controls and choose a sound.

Note: Discord’s native soundboard only works in voice channels.

3. Using Voicemod on PC

Voicemod is a third-party application that lets you map hotkeys to play sound effects in real-time. It acts as a virtual microphone, meaning it’ll play sounds through your voice channel as if you’re speaking.

Steps to Use:

  1. Download and install the Voicemod.
  2. Set up the Voicemod as your default input device in both the Windows and Discord settings.
  3. Use the built-in soundboard to assign sound clips to hotkeys.
  4. Press the hotkey while in a voice channel to play the sound.

Voicemod is ideal for users who want a seamless and customizable experience, especially streamers or podcasters.

Tips for Using Sound Buttons Respectfully

While sound buttons are a fun addition, misuse can lead to annoyance or even disciplinary action from server mods. Here are some etiquette tips:

  • Don’t spam sounds: Use them sparingly to enhance the conversation.
  • Use appropriate clips: Avoid offensive, loud, or NSFW sounds.
  • Respect roles and permissions: If the server has rules on bot usage or soundboard limits, follow them.
  • Communicate with server admins: If you want to add new sounds, check in with the mod team first.
